Çalışmamıza konu olan düşüncelerini yazar Osmanlı Devleti ve Türkler konusundaki İngilizce eseri The Present Sate of the Ottoman Empire’da derlemiştir. Rycaut kendinden önce yazılan Richard Knoll’un eseri History of Turks’u düzenleyerek yeniden yayımlamıştır. Yazarın ayrıca The Present State of the Greek and Armenian Churches isimli eseri vardır.

Portrait of an English Orientalist: Sir Paul Rycaut

This paper discusses the short biography of Sir Paul Rycaut, who worked as the ambassador of Levant Company in Smyrna (İzmir) between 1667-78. This biography mainly dwells on Rycaut’s idea of Turks and the Ottoman Empire based on his experience in the Ottoman world. He embodied all his idea and perceptions about Turks and the Ottoman Empire in his work The Present State of the Ottoman Empire (1665). He also edited Knoll’s History of Turks before its publication. The Present State of Armenian and Greek Churches is another work of the author which falls within the scope of this study. We believe that the present biography of Sir Paul Rycaut will contribute to his perception in Turkey and further studies on Rycaut who is much consulted on the Ottoman Empire by his contemporaries and prospective English Orientalist.
