Financial Development, Trade Openness and Economic Growth Relationship: The Case of Turkey

This paper aims to examine relationship between financial development, economic growth and trade openness in Turkey for the period 2004-2017. The variables were determined Credit/GDP, M2/GDP as financial development level indicators, the variables were determined Export/GDP, Import/GDP as trade openness level indicators for the econometric application of the paper. Gregory-Hansen Cointegration test results indicate that there is not a long-run relationship between financial development and trade openness levels and economic growth. Another econometric method applied in the paper is based on Toda-Yamamoto Causality Test results, it was determined that there is a causality relationship from Import/GDP variables to economic growth variable which is an trade openness indicators. When the findings are evaluated in general, it is revealed that there is a relationship between trade openness and economic growth in Turkey for the period 2004-2017.
