Bir toplumun duygu, düşünce, felsefe, ahlâk, inanç sistemleri ve yaşam biçimleri hakkında bilgi veren atasözleri, anlatım gücü ve kavram zenginliği açısından oldukça önemli yapılardır. Genel kural niteliğinde olan bu yapılar; toplumların tecrübeleri sonucu dilden dile, nesilden nesile aktarılarak günümüze kadar gelmiştir. Ne zaman, nerede, kim tarafından söylendiği bilinmemesi sebebiyle anonim mahiyettedirler. İnsanlık tarihi kadar çok eski dönemlere götürülen atasözleri, Türk dili ve tarihinin en temel kaynakları arasında yer alan Dîvânu Lugâti’t-Türk’te oldukça zengin ve hacimli bir görünüme sahiptir. Bu eserde yer alan atasözleri ile ilgili günümüze kadar birçok çalışma yapılmıştır.

Proverbs, which give information about a society's feelings, thoughts, philosophy, morals, belief systems and lifestyles, are very important structures in terms of expressive power and conceptual richness. These structures, which are the general rule; As a result of the experiences of the societies, it has been transferred from language to language, from generation to generation, and has reached the present day. They are anonymous because it is not known when, where and by whom they were told. Proverbs, which are taken back to ancient times as much as human history, have a very rich and voluminous appearance in Dîvânu Lugâti't-Türk, which is among the most basic sources of Turkish language and history. Many studies have been done about the proverbs in this work until today.
