STAMPED AMPHORA HANDLES from THE NECROPOLIS of SHATBY in ALEXANDRIA

The earliest excavations in the Necropolis of Shatby which was one of the earliest necropoleis in Alexand- ria, were held by E. Breccia, the director of the Greco-Roman Museum and the material was published byhim in 1912. In 1981, during the excavations in the necropolis, Egyptian archaeologists discovered somematerial including a group of amphora stamps. Five of totaly seven amphora stamps belong to Rhodianorigin and are dated between the late third century and the second century BC. One of them is given to thefirst century BC. One of the stamped handles among the finds is identified as Cnidian while the last one issuggested to belong to a Chian lagynos or a small-sized amphora.
