THE POTTERY OF THE ASSYRIAN COLONY PERIOD ACCORDING TO THE BUILDING LEVELS OF THE KANIŞ KARUM

Öz The pottery callcd Hittitc Pottery in Central Anatolia, appcarcd for the f'irst time in the fourth level1 of thc Kaniş Karum, thc car- licst of the four building Icvcls prescnt there. On the city-mound of Kültepe, no pottery of this kind was found in the level vvhich is earlier than level IV in the Karum area. Here, diffcrent typcs of pottery vvere used2. Pots belonging to this level vvere rnadc on a fast wheel and havc a restrictcd range of shapes. It is not clear vvhether they vvere vvidcly distribııted. İn spitc of this, the pottery of levels IV and III in the Karum is parallcl vvith the first phase of level ıı T at Alişar, vvith Level 5 M 3 * on the Citadel ınound, and vvith the first phase of the Early Hittite level at Alaca Höyük '. İn level IV there is also anotheı kind of pottery5 (called Alişar 111), vvhich is hand-madc and painted; there are also similar unpaintcd typcs. The proportion of these tvvo vvares is approxiınately half and half.
