The water –fluid intake of patients

This descriptive study was designed to determine the water and fluid intake of the hospitalized patients. The study was conducted with 379 subjects in Hacettepe University Adult Hospital. The data was collected by a specific tool developed by the author to determine the water and fluid intake of patients. The Percentage, Wilcoxon test, Mann-Whitney-U test and Kruskal Wallis variance analysis were used to evaluate the collected data. The data evaluation revealed that the patients did not consume water and fluid in the hospital environment. For the lack or failure in adequate water and fluid intake in the hospital environment, the patients expressed such reasons as complaints like pain, nausea and vomit, and they did not need to drink water due to anorexia or immobility, and that the hospital was unable to timely offer the water or fluid at their expected quality. It was suggested that the patients would be enlightened on the importance of water and fluid intake, and the water and fluid intake of patients would be meticulously monitored and recorded, so that a number of arrangements would be made to encourage the water-fluid intake and offer the right fluid at the right time to the patients.
