Investigations on the quality and production of pollen and their interaction in some strawberry species and cultivars
Pollen characteristics such as viability, germination rate, production capacity and homogenity are of importance in fertilization, fruit set and yield of many fruit species. This study was carried out at the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Atatürk University in 1996 to determine pollen quality characteristics of strawberry cultivars of Aliso, Brio, Cruz, Pocahontas, Tioga, Tufts and Vista (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) and Fragaria vesca (a local type) and Fragaria viridis Duch. (a local type) species. For this purpose, pollen viability tests of TTC (2,3,5 Triphenyl Tetrazolium Chlorid), IKI (Iodine with Potassium Iodide) and SG (Safranin-Gliserin), pollen germination tests of "Hanging drop method" (with0,5,10,15,20,25,30% sucrose and with 0.03,0.05,0.1,0.2% boric acid concentrations) and "Agar in petri method" (with 1 and 1.5% agar+5,10,15 and 20% sucrose contents) were used. Furthermore, the pollen production capacity was determined by "hemacytometric method". The best results are obtained in pollen viability tests from Aliso and Brio, in pollen germination tests from Cruz and Vista and in pollen production capacity from Aliso and Pocahontas cultivars compared to other cultivars. In addition, F.viridis was superior to F. vesca in terms of the above parameters. According to the correlation analysis, IKI viability test were significant correlated with pollen germination in sucrose and agar+sucrose medium.
