MHC class II receptor expression in patients with duodenal ulcer
Background and aims: Immune cells expressing MHC class II antigen receptors are the leading aggressive mechanisms against bacteria. These are the first cells in the organism to receive the microorganisms. The aim of this study was to determine the number of immune cells expressing MHC class II antigens in peripheral venous blood of patients with duodenal ulcers and Helicobacter pylori. Materials and methods: One hundred and twenty-three patients with H. pylori without any prior treatment [47 with small-sized duodenal ulcers (<6 mm); 54 with medium-sized (6-12 mm) and 21 healthy controls] were included in the study. The peripheral venous blood of patients was evaluated for CD 14, CD 45, CD 14/45, HLA-DR, and CD/HLA-DR by DAKO dual color reagent. Results: The number of CD 14 expressing cells in the small- and medium-sized duodenal ulcers was found to be significantly fewer than in the controls. The difference was more significant in small-sized duodenal ulcers. The decrease in CD 14/45 expression in both patient groups and in CD3/HLA-DR expression in the medium-sized ulcer group were significantly higher than in the controls. Conclusion: Decreasing numbers of CD 14 expressing cells can be one of the reasons for H. pylori infection. Such a decrease in cellular defense can be compensated by increasing the HLA-DR and CD3/HLA-DR expression.
