Praxeological Organisation as an Analysis Tool for Problem Solving: An Example of Dynamics Problem

This study aims to compare three analyses methods that can be used for analysing physics problem solving activities. These analyses tools are wrong-right, check list and praxeological analysis. For this study two types of problem were used. Fist is a routine problem about acceleration calculation problem that students encounter in mechanics and the second is a type of problem rarely seen about calculating acceleration of an object in multi-objects systems. Questions set called as Dynamic Question Set were administrated to 40 undergraduate students in 2013-2014 academic year in Central Anatolia region. Participants are voluntary and took General Physics I course. Three analyses tool were given different findings. An analysis according to wrong-right axis indicated that students had difficulties for calculating acceleration however this analysis tool was not able to indicate where difficulty arises. Checklist as an analysis tool gave detailed information about problem solving process however it is not able to show underlying reasons related to students’ difficulties. While praxeological analysis showed how students considered a type of problem and what problem solving strategy they activated. Then praxeological analysis offered an approach for diagnosing students’ difficulties
