Saliva; Composition and Function Importance for Diagnosis

The aim of this study was to perform a literature review about the composition and functions as well as describe the value of the diagnostic worth of saliva. Saliva is important for digestion, taste and bolus formation, protection of the teeth and antimicrobial effect. The use of saliva as a diagnostic fluid is gaining popularity as it offers distinct advantages over blood serum. These include the non-invasive method for collecting biological samples, contains specific biomarkers associated with health or disease, no need a medical person for sampling and the cost-effective applicability for screening large populations. Since many oral and systemic conditions manifest themselves as changes in the flow and composition of saliva, articles in literature up to date shows that saliva can be used as a diagnostic fluid in many illnesses. Further clinical studies for diagnostic usage of saliva are still needed
