Temporomandibular Joint And Temporomandibular Disorders

Temporomandibular dysfunction TMD often represents a major problem in dentistry. It is generally accepted that TMD has a multifactorial etiology. Parafunctions, trauma, malocclusion and stress are defined as cause of TMD. The signs and symptoms of TMD are limitation of mouth opening, mandibular deviation, chewing difficulty, headache, tenderness in the region of the muscles of mastication and pain in the area of the temporomandibular joint TMJ . TMD was generally presumed to be a disease affecting only adults. However, there are so many studies on children have reported high incidence of TMD. In nearly all age groups, the signs and symptoms of TMD appeared more in women than in men.
