Biochemical analyses in diagnosis of drowning and the importance of strontium

Cause of death of bodies recovered from water, has always been one of the issues attracting the attention of researchers in forensic sciences. Levels of various substances in body fluids show changes and even new molecules are being formed during postmortem period. Upon exposing external factors such as drowning, there will be changes in concentration of elements in body fluids in association of the environment. Up to date, ratios of various elements in sea water and in different body fluids (blood, plasma and serum samples) had been compared in a number of studies. On the basis of significant findings, in addition to the diagnosis of drowning, determination of time differences during the agonal period in fresh and sea water environments had been tried. In this study, studies of biochemical parameters targeting to contribute the diagnosis of drowning were reviewed and on the basis of obtained findings, the contribution biochemical parameters to the diagnosis of drowning was discussed.
