Institutional Trust by Gender: Personal Indicators of Confidence in Political Institutions in Countries with Different Gender Gaps

Trust has been widely discussed in the political science literature in a variety of contexts and forms. The term institutional trust refers to citizens’ trust in their governments’ institutions. This type of trust has received a lot of attention in discussions regarding political stability and democratization. The argument that disadvantaged groups in society would have lower levels of trust stands out in the discussion on the determinants of institutional trust. Based on this argument, the purpose of this study is to determine whether women have lower confidence than men. This study seeks an answer to this question using the most recent wave of World Values Survey/European Values Survey joint data. At the very least, this is expected to be true in countries with large gender gaps. However, the data suggests that rather than gender, satisfaction with the political system and social trust are the most important factors influencing institutional trust.
