Effect of a dentin desensitizer on shear bond strength of composite to root dentin
Aim: Aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of Gluma desensitizer on shear bond strength of microhybrid composite and gum colored composite to root dentin. Materials and Method: 30 anonymized human premolar teeth’s mesial and distal surfaces were ground flat to expose root dentin surfaces with standard smear layer (N=60). Either mesial or distal surfaces of the teeth were treated by dentin desensitizer (Gluma Desensitizer). The teeth were kept in deionized water for 7 days at 37oC. The specimens were divided into 2 experimental groups according to restorative materials: (1) A microhybrid composite (3M ESPE Z250) (2) A gum colored composite (ENA Hri Tender Pink) (n=15). All the restorative materials were applied according to the manufacturer’s directions after a self-etch adhesive system application (Clearfil SE Bond). The specimens were stored in 100% humidity for 24 hours. The specimens were placed on a Universal Shear Bond Testing Machine at a cross head speed of 1 mm/min. The values were recorded at the time of failure of restorative material. The bond strength values for shear forces were reported in MPa and derived by dividing the imposed force at the time of fracture by the bonded area. The failed samples were examined under a streomicroscope at X15 magnification to determine the mode of failure. The data were statistically evaluated by nonparametric Kruskal Wallis Test at 5% significance level. Results: The dentin desensitizer treated group showed statistically similar bond strength values with the no pre-treatment group (p>0.05). There is no statistically significant difference between the bond strength values of restorative materials (p>0.05). The predominant mode of failure was adhesive type for all groups except dentin desensitizer treated Z250 group. Conclusion: Shear bond strength of gum colored composite and Z250 was not affected by dentin desensitizer treatment
