Validity of the "rubbing" method for the field determination of the shear sense of a fault surface

To determine the shear sense on a fault surface, Turkish earthscientists widely use and teach a method that consists to rub the surface and to decide for the sense that presents the least resistance to the touch in the direction of the slickenlines. With examples of fault surfaces observed in the field, it is shown that this method induces errors and that more reliable methods based on the observation of minor fractures like Riedel shears and other structures should be used to better determine the shear sense of a fault surface in the field.
