A remarkable Europeanist movement had emerged in Turkey at the dawn of the Europeanintegration. Documents of the Historical Archives of the European Union show that manyleading statesmen and intellectuals became members of Europeanist organizations in this period.Generally speaking, Turkish Europeanism is influenced by domestic and internationalcircumstances of the period. Beginning from 1955, Turkey’s problems with Greece triggeredthe rise of nationalism and brought the Europeanism to an impasse. The military coup d’étatin 1960 brought an end to the first period of the Europeanist movement but not to officialrelations between the EEC and Turkey.
