Hard Laser Systems Used In Oral and Maxillofacial Surcigal Practice

For centuries light has been considered as a healing agent. In ancient Greece, sunlight had been used as heliotherapy method, and health-impaired individuals had been exposed to sunlight. Therapeutical effects of light have reached nowadays, and laser has found a place in modern medical practice with diagnosis and therapeutic modalities. Lasers have been used in the oral and maxillofacial field since the 1960s and from now on are being used routinely. Laser-assisted surgical techniques are widely applied in diseases like; obstructive sleep apnea, temporomandibular joint disorders, dental implants, premaling lesions, therapy of posttraumatic scars, hard tissue osteotomy, soft tissue surgery. Rather than conventional techniques, laser implementation has pros like efficiently directing the laser beam and being able to focus the high energy on relatively small sites. In this review we aim to present pros and cons of laser implementation, indications, efficiency and types of laser systems like argon, diode, nd yag, ho yag, er yag, carbon dioxide systems.
