Honeybee Pests and Diseases in Southern Marmara Region of Turkey

This survey was performed in order to determine honeybee (Apis mellifera) pest and disease prevalence during May-June 2001 in the region of Southern Marmara of Turkey. For this purpose, 22 apiaries in different locations were selected, and at least 10 bee colonies in each apiary were inspected. Inspections were made for Varroa destructor, Chalkbrood (Ascosphaera apis), Wax moth (Galleria mellonella) in the apiaries. Also, 50 bees were collected from each colony, placed in %70 ETOH, and examined for tracheal mites (Acarapis woodi) and 25 bees examined for Nosema (Nosema apis) in the lab. Some suspected frames were taken to the microbiology lab. to be examined for foulbrood diseases. Out of 217 bee colonies, 35% had Varroa, 26% Chalkbrood, 24% Nosema, 5% European Foulbrood (Melissococcus pluton) and 3% Wax moths. No American foulbrood (Paenibacillus larvae) or Tracheal mites (Acarapis woodi) were found in this study.
