The correlation between mitral annular calcification and prognostic nutritional index

Aim: Prior studies have established the importance of prognostic nutritional index (PNI) in patients with colorectal cancer and ST elevation myocardial infarction. However, the relation ship between the nutritional status and the mitral annular calcification (MAC) has not been investigated yet. Hence, the aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the presence of MAC and the PNI. Material and Methods: In total, 398 patients who were admitted to our cardiology department were included in this retrospective analysis. A total of 310 patients with MAC (+) constituted the study group, while 88 subjects without MAC (-) were accepted as a control group.Clinical characteristics of the patients including age, sex, hypertension and diabetes mellitus were retrieved from hospital electronic database. The PNI was calculated using the following equation: 10×serum albumin (g/dL) + 0.005 × total lymphocyte count (per mm3). Results: Serum albumin levels were found to be significantly lower in the MAC (+) group compared to the control group (3.76±0.57 vs. 4.12±0.31, p
