Investigation of Staphylococcus aureus in Pre-operative Nasal Cultures
Objective: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most frequently isolated microorganisms among community and hospital acquired infections. It is known that nasal carriage of S. aureus increases the risk of post-operative wound infections. Method:Nasal swab specimens were inoculated on 5 % sheep blood agar using streak plate method. Suspicious colonies were Gram stained and to determine S. aureus isolates the plasma coagulase test was applied. Methicilline resistance was determined using the agar screening method Results:In this study pre-operative nasal cultures obtained between January and December 2006 were evaluated retrospectively. Of the 3,599 cultures, 601 16.6 % yielded Methicilline-sensitive and 3 0.08 % Methicilline-resistant S. aureus while 2,995 83.2 % were samples showed a normal flora. Conclusion:It is concluded that obtaining pre-operative nasal cultures routinely would be beneficial for the early determination of carriers, immediate control with antimicrobial therapy, and prevention of Methicilline-resistant and Methicilline-sensitive S. aureus infections
