THE SANCTUARY OF DEMETER AT CAUNUS: ARCHITECTURE AND IDENTIFICATION

The Kaunos Demeter Sanctuary has been identified in the 1970s and rescue excavations have been carried out in this area. However, since no studies were carried out and no studies were conducted for the determination of the materials, no archaeological and scientific studies were conducted on the area until 1992. After this date, the first phase of the resumption excavation work was ended with a TUBITAK project. This article aims to reveal the results of the excavations carried out within this scope and the findings related to the architecture and identification of the area. The area is located on a terrace in the part of Kaunos almaks called Küçükkale. The ruins of a large church were seen on the terrace, but no temple belonging to the earlier phase was found. It could be reached by the stairs made with care on the west side. As a result of the excavations carried out in the area, it has been determined that the interior of the Church is full of waste with offerings. In number, the largest group of finds is oil lamps, followed by terracotta figurines. In addition, a large number of miniature hydria and animal bones were found next to the kyhtras. The area has the most brilliant time in the Hekatomnids period.
