Tarihi antik dönemlere dayanan dokumacılık insanların ilk uğraşlarından birisi olup, günümüzde dokumacılık ve bu kapsamda dokuma kumaş tasarımı estetik ve tekniğin birlikte değerlendirildiği bir süreçte gerçekleştirilmektedir. Bu süreçte kumaşın görsel görünümünü etkileyen estetik, sadece motif düzenlemeleri ile oluşturulan desenden ibaret değildir.Aynı zamanda havlı, tüylü, kabarık, rölyef, yanar döner, fırçalanmış etkiler gibi farklı doku ve görsel etkilerin teknik, malzeme ve bitim işlemlerinin de birlikte değerlendirildiği yüzey görünümlerini içermektedir. Dokuma kumaşlarda farklı görsel etkiler oluşturulmasının yanı sıra, motiflerin oluşturduğu desenlere de katkıda bulunan teknik, malzeme ve bitim işlemlerinin içinde malzeme, estetik nitelikli görsel etki oluşturmada özellikle son yıllarda birinci derecede öneme sahiptir. 20. yüzyılın başından itibaren yapay liflerin keşfi dokuma kumaşlarda materyalin estetik özellikler üzerine etkisini ve çeşitliliğini artırırken, 1970 li yıllarda ortaya çıkan doğala dönüş trendinin de etkisi ile iplik yerine kullanılan şerit, bant, film gibi malzemeler de kumaş tasarımlarında kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Bu araştırma kapsamında örgü ve tekniğin sabit tutulduğu prototip bir tasarımdan yola çıkılarak, farklı materyallerin dokuma kumaş yapısında meydana getirdiği yüzey görünümleri incelenmiş ve elde edilen sonuçlar değerlendirilmiştir.

Weaving which has spanned back the ancient periods was one of the first challenges of the human being, and current days, there has been carried out a process that weaving and, in this extend, weaving fabric design and technical issues have been evaluated together. In this process, the aesthetic that affects the visual appearance of the fabric is not the pattern produced only with motif (pattern) arrangements. At the same time, it includes the surface images evaluated together with the technical, material and end processes of different texture and visual effects such as piled, hairy, fluffy, relief, iridescent and brushed effects. Besides creating different visual effects in weaving fabrics, material in the technical, material and end processes which assist the patterns that motifs form has the first importance especially in recent years for in producing visual effect with aesthetic characteristics. While discovering artificial fibers has increased the effect and variations on aesthetic characteristics in weaving fabrics since the beginning of the 20th century, with the effect of returning to the natural trend that revealed in 1970s, materials were used instead of thread such as ribbon, band and film. In the extent of this research, starting from a prototype design that weave and technique were held stable, surface appearances that different materials produced in weaving fabric structure and the results were evaluated.
