Kallipolis’ten Gelibolu’ya – Bir İsim Nedir Ki?

I. Dünya Savaşı’nda yüklendiği kilit görev ve üstlendiği büyük sorumlulukla uluslararası bir ün kazanmış Çanakkale’nin Gelibolu ilçesi, geçmişten bugüne çok katmanlı bir tarihe sahip olmuştur. Özellikle ad bilimi ile süreğen tarihin nasıl birbiriyle iç içe olduğunu işleyen makalede, bir ismin yalnızca basit bir adlandırma olmadığını aynı zamanda kültürel değişimin ve çeşitliliğin de önemli bir yansıması olduğunu görmekteyiz. Ayrıca makalede, Antik Yunan Çağı’ndan Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’na Gelibolu ismi ile Gelibolu Yarımadası’nın tarihî gelişiminin yanında başka ‘Gelibolu’lara da kısa bir bakış sunulmaktadır.

Gallipoli a small town of Çanakkale in Dardanelles, which has gained an international fame with its key role and great responsibility during the World War I, has had a multilayered history from the past to the present. In particular, we find in this article, which shows how closely intertwined the onomastics and the progressive history each other, that a name is not only a simple naming, but also an important reflection of the cultural change and diversity. In addition to the historical development of the name of Gallipoli and the Gallipoli Peninsula from the Classical Greek Era to the Ottoman Empire, a short overview of the other ‘Gallipolis’s were also presented.
