Safe Laser Use in Dentistry: A Review
Laser technology offers some advantages such as non-bleeding surgical procedure, reduction of need for anesthesia, minimal post-op pain, disinfection. Because of frequent use of lasers in dentistry, laser safety has become more important. There are some hazards during use of dental lasers such as ocular hazards, tissue injury, inhalation of vapor during application, fire and explosion. The safe use of lasers is possible with the precautions that must be taken by healthcare professionals in order to minimize the damage caused by laser accidents. In this review, the risks associated with laser use in dentistry have been investigated and some laser safety protocols and precautions have been described that can be clinically applied to prevent laser injuries.
