The problems in diagnosing and treatment of amebiasis in Turkey

Abstract The etiologic pattern of diarrheal diseases in Turkey does not show a significantly different distribution from the patterns in other European countries. It is speculated that amoebic dysentery is over-diagnosed and therefore over-reported in countries where hygiene and nutrition conditions are very low and environmental sanitation is very poor. The increase in the number, sensitivity and widespread use of microbiological and parasitological diagnostic methods, along with continuous medical education will reveal the real incidence of this infection and the over-treatment caused by over-diagnosis will diminish.
