Monitoring and support of child development in health services

Developmental monitoring and support is a process that includes an understanding of the child's cognitive, emotional, social and neuromotor development, the child's individual strengths and the caregiving environment that supports development. Providing that all children develop as desired is a duty of health care workers, just as important as preventing and treating somatic diseases and disorders. Since childhood mortality and morbidity in our country are changing, developmental problems are highly prevalant, developmental problems concern almost all families, support of childhood development is a part of children's rights and since the health care system is the only system that can reach preschool children; the basics of monitoring and supporting child development should be included in the education and practices of the health staff, who provide care for children. The aim of this review is to share with physicians and other health care workers the current theoretical knowledge, methods and experience that can help them monitor and support children development in differentfields such as cognitive, neuromotor, lingual, emotional and relational.
