Chemicals in furnitures and their effects on health

The furniture industry is developing every day, with this development bringing along new materials and chemicals that are used. Most of the adhesives, varnish and paints used in the making of furnitures contain chemicals whose toxicities are unknown. Among the most discussed and researched indoorpollutants emitted from furnitures are formaldehyde and fire retardants. Fire retardants containing polybromodiphenyl esters (PBDE) and organophosphates are becoming widely used in the products. Some of the hazardous effects of these substances on health are known; however, many have not yet been documented. The aim of this paper is to give information about health risks arising from furnitures, points to mind while buying furniture, and things to do after they are bought and brought to homes or offices.
