Perceived Appearance and Self-Esteem as Predictors of Regular Exercise Participants’ Dispositional Flow

The purpose of the present study was to investigatewhether the dispositional flow state of regularexercise participants were predicted by perceivedappearance and self-esteem. The study samplecomprised of 142 men (Mage = 24.25, SD = 6.50) and153 women (Mage = 27.33, SD = 8.23) exercise participantsexercising regularly more than six monthsat different sport centers. Demographic informationform, perceived appearance sub dimension of PhysicalSelf-Description Questionnaire, Rosenberg SelfesteemScale, and Dispositional Flow Scale were usedto collect the data. To examine the role of perceivedappearance and self-esteem in the prediction of dispositionalflow of regular exercise participants, a hierarchicalregression analysis was conducted. At Step1 of the regression analysis, perceived appearancewas considered as a significant contributor for explaining23 % variance of participants’ dispositional flow(p < .01). At Step 2 of the regression analysis, self-esteem was considered as a significant contributor forexplaining 20 % variance of participants’ dispositionalflow (p < .01). Results indicated that perceived appearanceand self-esteem predicted total 43 % variance ofexercise participants’ dispositional flow in the currentstudy. Findings of the study supported the assertionthat perceived appearance and self-esteem play significantrole in predicting flow experiences of regularexercise participants.
