Akan oyunda gerçekleşen gollerin %26,32’si kenar ortalar sonucunda meydana gelirken, hızlı hücumlardan %12,78, organize ataklar, dip çizgiden altı-pasın gerisine çıkarılan paslar (cut-back) ve kritik paslardan %11,28 oranında gol gerçekleşmiştir.

Analysis of Goals Scored in 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup

The aim of this study is to analyse the patterns of goals scored at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. It also aims to provide practical information for coaches and sports scientists in their areas of application by revealing the goal sequences. The study was conducted using a descriptive retrospective statistical design. Video material was collected from the InStat Scout® website (InStatSport, Moscow, Russia), an online video and data platform. The obtained video material was watched and recorded, and the formation of goals scored was recorded using an observation tool built in Microsoft Excel® (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington, USA). Frequency and percentage distributions of the data obtained were then calculated. In a tournament in which 172 goals were scored (2.68 goals per match), 77.33% of the goals were scored from open play and 22.67% from set pieces. Crosses accounted for 26.32% of goals scored from open play, while 12.78% came from fast attacks, 11.28% from organized attacks, cut-backs and critical passes. Most goals from set pieces came from penalties, 41.03%. In terms of the number of passes made before the goals were scored, the proportion of goals scored with eight or more passes was 27.07%, while the proportion of goals scored with 0-1 passes was 18.05%. In terms of time intervals, most goals were scored between 61 and 75 minutes at 18.60%. The teams that scored the first goal won 75.43% of the matches. This study, which analyses the pattern of goals scored at the 2022 World Cup, shows that most goals are scored because of a sequence of eight or more passes. That teams that score the first goal are more likely to win their matches, and that wingers are favoured to score goals. And that there has been a dramatic reduction in the number of goals scored from set pieces in this World Cup.
