He begins by discussing the conditional and obligatory relationship between sound and silence, then argues that silent and sounded films are not as silent and as audible as they seemed. He follows in the tracks of certain film theorists (such as Béla Balázs and Noël Burch) while looking at the films of influential directors, mostly in the realm of art cinema. Thus he arrives at a general overview of filmic silence in its diverse shapes and structures.
