Root caries and treatment

Soft tissue recession due to age, traumatic toothbrushing habits, periodontal disease or periodontal treatment will unavoidably result in a higher number of tooth surfaces that are at risk for the development of root caries. The development of caries on the exposed root surface is associated with the composition and quantity of dental plaque, diet, the composition and flow of saliva, and exposure to fluoride. Therefore adults with exposed root surfaces and with reduced salivary flow due to medication are particularly at high risk for root surface caries. Prevention based on elimination of risk factors is the most desirable approach for management. Patients who have developed caries of the roots can be treated with remineralization strategies, recontouring or restored with various restorative materials.
