The effect of chlorhexidine gluconate on the development of bacteremia after debonding

Background: This study aims to investigate the effect of chlorhexidine gluconate on the development of bacteremia after debonding which is performed at the end of orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: From patients who were undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment and were indicated for debonding, a total of 30 patients in 2 groups were selected for the study and 15 patients for each group; no mouthwash (control group) and mouthwash containing 0.12% Chlorhexidine gluconate (experimental group). Blood samples were taken from the antecubital veins of the patients before (T0) and after (T1) the debonding procedure. Blood samples were placed in a blood culture bottle and bacterial growth was investigated. Results: According to the results, none of the blood samples taken at T0 showed bacterial growth, whereas, among the blood samples taken at T1, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus salivarius and Streptococcus mitis growth, respectively, were observed in four different patients in control group. In experimental group, no growth was detected. The results as between control group and experimental group were found to be statistically significant (p
