Abstract The efficiency, biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of bonding agents in primary and permanent teeth In recent years, restorative and adhesive materials bonded to dental hard tissues are improved because of rising aesthetic concerns of patients. There are many factors affecting the selection of dental materials such as tooth and surrounding tissues, factors belong to patients and properties of material itself. Recently, adhesive systems are classified as .total-etch. and .self-etch. and both systems have several advantages and disadvantages on clinical applications. Because of the differences between primary and permanent teeth regarding the morphology, histology and physiology, the performance of the adhesive systems are different from each other. The variety of adhesive systems provides simplicity and some advantages in pediatric dentistry in which is difficult to work with children. The use of new materials with new chemical properties has also raised questions about the biological safety of new materials. These biological risks are complex and they can not be defined completely yet. The development in the adhesive technology points that more biocompatible and advanced adhesive systems may be improved in the future. Key words: acid-etching, total-etch systems, self-etch systems, biocompatibility, cytotoxicity.
