İstanbul Üniversitesi Merkez Kampüsü’nde bulunan taş eserler ile ilgiliçalışmamız 2005-2006 yıllarında parçaların envanterlerinin çıkarılması ilebaşlamıştır. Bizans ve Osmanlı dönemlerine ait çoğunluğunu sütun başlıklarınınve sütun parçalarının oluşturduğu parçalar arasında korkuluk levhası parçası,sütun kaideleri gibi çeşitli mimari plastik eserler bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışma ilemerkez kampüs içinde yer alan taş eserlerin tanımlanmasının ve tanıtılmasınınyanı sıra parçaların bulunduğu bölgenin ve yakın çevresinin Bizans ve Osmanlıdönemlerindeki değişiminin verilmesi amaçlanmıştır.Bölgenin Byzantion zamanından başlayarak Bizans ve Osmanlı dönemlerininyanı sıra Cumhuriyet döneminde yoğun imar görmesi bu çevredeki yapılarıngünümüze ulaşmasını engellemiştir. Bu nedenle İstanbul Üniversitesi MerkezKampüsü’nde bulunan taş eserlerin kesin olarak kontekslerini belirlemek mümkündeğildir. Parçaların tanımlanmasında ve tarihlendirilmesinde üslup ve teknikbakımdan benzer örnekler dikkate alınmıştır. Parçalar bölgenin mimari açıdantarihsel gelişimi doğrultusunda değerlendirilmiştir.

Our study on architectural sculptures found in the Main Campus of IstanbulUniversity commenced with taking inventory of the pieces in 2005and 2006. Column capitals and column shafts from the Byzantine and Ottomanperiods constitute majority of the pieces along with various architecturalsculptures such as fragment of slab and column bases. The studyaims to identify and promote the stone works in the main campus andconvey transformation of the area and immediate vicinity during the Byzantineand Ottoman periods.Structures in the area did not survive due to extensive construction inthe area since Byzantion through the Byzantine and Ottoman times as wellas the Republican period. Therefore, it is not possible to determine the exactcontext of the architectural sculptures in the Main Campus of IstanbulUniversity. Defi nition and dated of the stone works are considered in similarexamples in technical and stylistic features. The pieces were evaluatedaccording to the architectural development in the area.
