The Determination of Fathers' Paternal Adaptation Level and Related Factors

Introduction: Paternal adaptation can be defined as paternal harmony, the ability to fulfill parental roles and responsibilities, and the ability to perceive becoming a parent. From a social perspective, fatherhood emerges through the birth process and having a baby at home.Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the fathers’ paternal adaptation level and related factors in the postpartum period.Method: The study is descriptive and cross-sectional and it is conducted between November and December 2019 at two private hospitals in Istanbul. Research sample consisted of 258 participants. Data were collected through a questionnaire form developed by the researchers based on the existing literature and the Paternal-Infant Attachment Scale. Results: The results for the Paternal-Infant Attachment Scale indicated that the average points for Patience and Tolerance subscale, Pleasure in the Interaction subscale and Love and Pride subscale were 33.52 ± 5.10, 27.10 ± 4.06, and 12.71 ± 2.24 respectively. The total scale score average was 73.34 ± 9.13. A statistically significant difference was found between the Patience and Tolerance sub-dimension scores and scale total score according to the age variable (p≤0.01). Total scale scores of first-time fathers were significantly higher than those with 4 or more children (p≤0.05).Conclusion: For a strong and healthy paternal attachment, the fathers’ parental role should develop through fathers’ participation in pregnancy, birth and postnatal trainings. Model babies can be used for practice during these trainings and practices oriented towards father-infant interaction at hospitals can be increased in the postpartum period.
