‘Yeni normal’ ve dilde yenilikler

Koronavirüs sonrasında ortaya çıkan yeni durum ve şartların kalıcılığını, hayata dair birçok şeyin değişerek artık bir standarda dönüştüğünü ifade etmek üzere bir tabir ortaya atılmıştır: ‘Yeni Normal’. Yakın zamanlarda birçok kelime ve tabirde olduğu gibi bunda da İngilizceden Türkçeye bire bir kelime aktarma yoluyla bir tercüme söz konusudur. Aslı, yani İngilizcesi, malum olacağı üzere ‘(the) new normal’dır. Tahmin edilebileceği gibi tabirin çıkış yeri de İngiltere değil, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’dir. ‘New normal’ ilkin 1966 yılında yayımlanmış bir Amerikan romanında kullanılmakla birlikte bugünkü manasından o zamanlar henüz çok uzaktır. Zamanla 11 Eylül (2001) sonrası dünyanın aldığı hâli ve geçerli olan yeni şartları; bilahare 2008-2012 arasında iş dünyasında görülen bazı mali ve iktisadi durumları izah etmek üzere de kullanılmıştır. New normal, 2020’den itibaren, ilk defa insan sağlığını/hayatını tehdit eden viral bir salgın münasebetiyle, Koronavirüs musibeti süresince mevcut olan -ve sonrasında uzun bir müddet devam edeceği tahmin edilen- durumu/şartları ifade için kullanılmaya başladı. Bu yazıya konu olan, işte bu bağlamda kullanılan ‘yeni normal’dir. 2020 sonrasında oluşan yeni dünya düzeninde Türkçede sıkça duyulan tek tabir ‘yeni normal’ değildir. ‘Yeni normal’in getirdiği şartlar çerçevesinde dilde de birtakım yenilikler ortaya çıkmıştır. Daha çok biyoloji ve tıp ıstılahı olarak bilinen, Batı menşeli birçok tabir artık gündelik dile girerek yaygınlaşmıştır. Bunların yanı sıra sayıları az olmakla birlikte Türkçe imkânlarla türetilmiş, ‘yeni normal’ mahsulü bazı kelimelere de rastlanmaktadır. Bu makalede dilde görülen bu yeniliklere filolojik bir bakışla temas edilecektir.

The new normal and recent trends in the language

A new term has emerged in Turkish to refer to the permanence of the new situation and circumstances in the post-Covid world whereby many things changed to become the standard: ‘Yeni Normal’. As has been recently the case with many other words and terms, it was literally borrowed from English to Turkish through loan translation. As can be easily guessed, the original English term is ‘the new normal’. Likewise, it is easy to guess that its origin is not England but, the United States. Although the term first appeared in an American novel in 1966, it was still far from its present-day meaning. Later on, it also came to be used to explain the new state of the post-9/11 world and the subsequent regulations, including the newly-emerging financial and economic conditions in the business world between 2008-2012. Starting from 2020, the New Normal was first used with reference to the circumstances that is caused by a viral pandemic threatening human life and is expected to persist for many more years. Hence, the subject of the present paper is the New Normal in this last-mentioned context. In the new post-2020 world order, ‘yeni normal’ was not the only oft-heard new term in Turkish. Certain new terms also emerged in everyday life by reason of the conditions brought by the New Normal. Many biological and/or medicinal terms of Western origin have found increasingly widespread use in everyday language. In addition, albeit few, there exist some new terms that are derived as products of the New Normal using Turkish morphological material. This article dwells upon these new trends in Turkish from a philological perspective.
