Ariassos’tan Aur.

Epitaph of Aur. Asklepianos Krateros and his Family From Ariassos (ICPisidia 133)

In this paper, I offer a new version of a funerary inscription published as ICPisidia 133 from Ariassos. On the basis of a drawing and a squeeze made by Rudolf Heberdey in 1902 the reading of the published text can be improved significantly and an additional line can be reconstructed: the text contains a prohibition and a penalty clause showing many similarities with those preserved in the neighbouring city of Termessos. The sarcophagus belongs to a certain Aur(elius) Asklepianos Krateros and his family. The name of his wife is still difficult to read, but the previously unattested female name of Εὐκλιανή is brought up for discussion. The use of the nomen gentile Aurelius for the persons mentioned in the inscription suggests a date after the Constitutio Antoniniana. In the last part of the paper, I argue, mainly on the basis of the sum to be paid as a fine in case of unauthorized burial, but also due to the type of grave, that the members of this family were of relatively modest social status. This means that they may not have belonged to the upper class of Ariassos represented in the inscriptions already known from this city.
