Trabzon, 21 Ağustos 1914 tarihinde Karadeniz kıyılarından başlayarak Bitlis’e kadar uzanan bir yörünge üzerinde gerçekleşecek tam Güneş tutulmasını gözlemlemek için, uygun bir konumdadır. Gözlem yapmak için, yerli ve yabancı ekipler kente gelmeye hazırlanmış, ancak Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nın başlangıcı ve meteorolojik elverişli olmayacağı öngörüsü, çalışmalara engel oluşturmuştur. Trabzon’da bir din görevlisi olan Dr. Lyndon S. Crawford, tam Güneş tutulmasını bir kaç saniye izleyebilmiş ve bir mektupla İstanbul’da yayımlanan The Orient dergisine rapor etmiştir.

Trabzon, a major port on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, was the one the sites where the total solar eclipse of August 21st, 1914 could be observed. A number of astronomical teams had planned to arrive at this location for, but both the outbreak of hostilities leading to World War I, and the forecast of poor visibility led to alteration of plans. One witness of the total eclipse in Trebizond is the Rev. Dr. Lyndon S. Crawford. His brief report decribes the few seconds when the total eclipse was experienced. Photographic documentation was not possible at this instance.
