Throughout history, meetings have been conducted for different reasons. Advanced forms of these meetings have different names, and they are named as "congress" in the widest sense. Especially after World War 2, significant increase was observed in the number of congresses, and the concept of congress has been began to evaluate as a tourism activity. The position and importance of congress tourism within the activity of tourism is gradually increasing. International congresses have the highest portion of global congress tourism. Turkey has also great potential in this regard. However, in order to enable Turkey participating to this competition, it should be developed infrastructure and superstructure opportunities having effect in the development of congress tourism.

Tarih boyunca çe?itli amaçlarla toplantylar yapylmy?tyr. Bu toplantylaryn günümüzdeki geli?mi? ?ekilleri çe?itli isimlerle adlandyrylmakta ve en geni? anlamlary ile "kongre" olarak tanymlanmaktadyrlar. Özellikle Ykinci Dünya Sava?y'ndan sonra kongrelerin sayylarynda büyük arty?lar görülmü? ve kongre olgusu bir turizm hareketlili?i olarak de?erlendirilmeye ba?lanmy?tyr. Kongre turizminin turizm hareketlili?i içindeki yeri ve önemi giderek artmaktadyr. Dünya kongre turizminde en büyük paya uluslararasy kongreler sahiptir. Uluslararasy kongreler son yyllarda turizmden yüksek gelirler elde eden ülkeler arasynda büyük bir rekabete konu olmaktadyrlar. Türkiye de bu açydan önemli bir potansiyele sahiptir. Ancak Türkiye'nin bu yary?a katylabilmesi için, kongre turizminin geli?mesinde etkili olan altyapy ve üstyapy olanaklarynyn geli?tirilmesi gerekmektedir.
