Use of air source heat pumps is limited in cold climates due to lower heating capacity and COP at lower ambient temperature conditions. Since cooling design loads are smaller than the heating design loads in cold climates, heat pumps are small sized for heating (backup heating required) or oversized for cooling. In addition, as ambient temperature decreases, heating cycle efficieny decreases due to higher temperature lift. To overcome such difficulties various design modifications and technologies have been suggested and applied. Design and modification suggestions for air source heat pumps in cold climates are studied in this paper.
