Plastination. Is it a Science or a Freak Show?

Plastination is a unique method of preserving durable anatomical specimens while retaining lifelike condition. The plastinated specimens are odorless, non toxic and mechanically resistant to a high degree. They can be manipulated by teachers and students without protective equipment like gloves. Plastination is a procedure during which water and fat of gross specimen are replaced by a polymerisable resin. Invented in 1978 by Prof. Dr. Gunther von Hagens from the University of Heidelberg. The exhibition of human corpes was first shownin 1996 and has not stopped touring since. So far it has visited Mannheim, Vienna, Basel, Cologne and Oberhausen. Advertised as the most successful exhibition in the world, it has been by more six million people. In this article, we describe the method of plastination, give Prof.Dr. Gunther von Hagens's biography along with his work and discuss the positive andnegative criticisms of these plastination exhibitions.
