Finite element modelling of turning process using cutting tool with multilayer coatings

In this study, a numerical analysis was carried out to obtain some data that cannot to be determined or measurement is too hard (tool stress, tool7chip interface temperature and temperature distribution in tool) in orthogonal cutting process. For this purpose TiCN+Al2O3+TiN coated carbide tool was used and AISI 4340 steel was selected as workpiece material. It was verified the accuracy of the finite element model developed in this study with experimental cutting tests. End of the study the variation of tool stresses was obtained for different cutting speeds and feed rates. Besides the variation of temperature and stress between coating materials was also obtained for each cutting parameters.
