İstenmeyen gebelik, insanların geçmişten günümüze çözmeye uğraştıkları sorunlardan biridir. İnsanlar bu problemin üstesinden gelmek için pek çok yöntem geliştirmiştir. Eski dönemlerde bu kullanılan kontraseptif yöntemler, etkisiz ve mantıkdışı olsa da günümüzde kullanılan; hormonal kontraseptifler, rahim içi araçlar, bariyer yöntemleri, cerrahi sterilizasyonlar gibi yöntemlerin, istenmeyen gebeliğin önlenmesindeki yüksek yüzdeli başarısı bilimsel çalışmalar sonucu kanıtlanmıştır.Oral kontraseptiflerin yüksek yüzdeli korunma başarısı olsa da, her ilaç gibi istenmeyen etkileri de bulunmaktadır. Besin/ilaç ve ilaç/ilaç etkileşimleri bu istenmeyen etkilerin başında gelmektedir. Oluşan bu etkileşim sonucunda, kullanılan ilacın/besinin etkisi değişebileceği gibi oral kontraseptifin etkisi de azalabilmektedir.
