Treatment and Prophylaxis in Rabbit Coccidiosis

Coccidiosis is an important disease for the health and performance of rabbits and is an important disease caused by Eimeria species parasites that affect feed intake, feed digestibility and reproductive performance. Coccidiosis, which causes high morbidityand mortality rates, is divided into intestinal (E. intestinalis, E. irresidua, E. magna, E. perforans, E. media) and hepatic coccidiosis (Eimeria stiedae) according to the type of Eimeria ingested in rabbits. Clinical manifestations of hepatic coccidiosis in rabbits are loss of appetite, anorexia, hair loss, diarrhea, yellowish mucous membranes, fatigue, ascites, and significant loss of body weight. In intestinal coccidiosis, it causes weight loss, diarrhea and death due to malabsorption of nutrients caused by villous atrophy, electrolyte imbalance, anemia, hypoproteinemia and dehydration. Anti-coccidial drugs are used accompanied by strict hygienic measures in the treatment. Various herbal medicines, probiotics and prebiotics have further been the subjectof research in recent years due to the development of resistance to drugs, side effects, cost expense and prophylactic needs. In order for an anti-coccidial drug be effective, it must have prophylactic effect as well as its therapeutic feature. In this review, current knowledge will be given about anti-coccidial administrations investigated for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes against coccidiosis in rabbits.
