A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO AGING AND HEARING HEALTH

As a natural consequence of aging, aging-related changes are observed in hearing. Hearing loss due to aging is also known as “presbycusis”. Presbycusis is the third most common health condition to affect the elderly, after heart disease and arthritis. Presbycusis is associated with a gradual decrease in hearing sensitivity and difficulty in understanding and distinguishing speech. It is known that the presence of hearing loss affects the areas of communication, security and social interaction in older adults, leading to social isolation and depression of individuals. Presbycusis can create serious cognitive and physical problems on health. It increases the risk of dementia by causing cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Although there is no treatment for presbycusis today, the quality of life and communication skills of elderly individuals can be improved with current hearing aid technologies. Hearing aids can help improve symptoms and prevent or delay other consequences of hearing loss. For this reason, early detection of hearing loss and initiation of treatment and rehabilitation will increase the quality of life of elderly individuals. However, despite the increase in elderly individuals with hearing loss, there is still no follow-up and protocol for hearing screening in adults and elderly individuals in many places, including our country. The aim of this study is to evaluate hearing loss due to aging, to raise awareness and awareness of hearing loss due to aging from the perspective of public health and mental health.
