Adolescence as a Crisis and Crisis in Adolescents

Introduction: Crisis is an acute and short lasting disorder that is seen with loss of stability, caused by various kind of stres. Stressfull life events may cause crisis as well as changingover a life period to another may turn into a life crisis. The purpose of this study is to determine the problems of adolescents, life crisis spesific for adolescence and adolescence as a life crisis itself, in the last five year’s adolescent population referred to Ankara Universitiy Crisis Intervention Center. Methods and Materials: According to Crisis Intervetion Center records, 1259 individuals were accepted in the last five years. 264 were 15-21 age group and included in the study. The data extracted from patient follow up notes evaluated by using SPSS 12 program. Results: Adolescent referral to Crisis, Intervention Center rate was 20% of total referrals. 70.4 % were female.and 29,6 % were male, Crisis related to the adolescence period rate was 17.% Another significant referral cause was performance anxiety related to examination, and found 30.% This study also indicates that accidental and stressfull life events cause higher referral rate than developmental life period events. 59 of 264 referrals (22,3%) had suicidal ideation and 21 of 264 (8%) had suicidal behaviour. Discussion: As a developmental period, adolescence may turn into a life crisis, however stressful life events that occurred during this period may cause life crisis. Whether related to a develompental period or a challenging life, life crisis may show progression to a mental disease, but it also is an opportunity for the adolescent for improvement. Therefore, crisis intervention will process as a preventive mental health service.Intervention will also improve adolescents to edal with other possible crisis. Being educated for crisis intervention is important for mental health professionals for first intervention to a crisis patient as well as stimulating the supportive intitutions for reinforcement
