The role of women in social and political life has been an important issue for American filmmakers since 7960s. lnitially, Hollywood had a liberal approa0, telling stories of women in pursuit of their own goals, leaving traditional social struc­tures. in the 1980s, however, Hollywood took a reactionary standpoint where libera­tion of women has been despised. 'Films portrayed feminist lifestyle as miserable and women as emotionally incapable of /iving their own lives. What women in those movies really wanted was marriage and ehi/dren. More importantly, even in the films that seemed to defend feminist values, the subtext emphasized weakness of free women and bliss of marriage.
