The Relationship between Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio and Pruritus in Hemodialysis Patients

INTRODUCTION: Pruritus is themostcommon skin problem in hemodialysispatientsand is an importantsymptomaffectingquality of life. An importantcause of pruritus is inflammation. Neutrophil/lymphocyteratio is used as an inflammatory marker in chronicdiseases. Weaimedtoinvestigatewhetherthere is anyrelationshipbetweenitchingandneutrophil/ lymphocyteratio in hemodialysispatients. METHODS: Eighty patients (45 males, 35 females) and 80 healthycontrols (35 males, 45 females) undergoingroutinehemodialysisfor at least 3 monthswereincluded in thestudy. Biochemicalandhematologicalvariables of thepatientswererecorded, itchingwasdeterminedanddermatologicalexaminationswereperformed. RESULTS: Themeanage of thepatientsandcontrolswere 59±14.44 and 57.61±14.29 years, respectively. While 70% (n=56) of thepatients had nopruritus, 18% (n=14) had localizeditchingand 12% (n=10) had itching. Itchingwasepisodic in 20 (25%) of thesepatientsandpersistent in 4 (5%).
