Analyzing and Resolving the Cyprus Conflict

Analyzing and Resolving the Cyprus Conflict

This article attempts to analyze the ongoing conflict on Cyprus between the Greek and Turkish ethnic groups from a broader perspective, based on historic facts. It is particularly a critique of the traditional analyses of the conflict that pay more attention to present legal or political problems. The study suggests that the Cyprus conflict is a complex one involving both relational and interest dimensions, most of which are rooted in past traumas, dominating the GreekTurkish relations at large. Failure to understand this complexity is unlikely to produce a lasting peace. Based on the analysis of the conflict, the study tries to come up with some recommendations for the prospect as well. In this respect, especially many confidence building measures are proposed and discussed in detail
