THE VARIOUS THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS OF GINGER (ZINGIBER OFFICINALE ROSCOE) ON HUMAN HEALTH

Ginger is a yellowish root also called as spice which belongs to the zingiberaceae family and grown in various parts of the world, countries such as India, China, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Australia, Fiji, Jamaica and Nepal. It is a flowering plant with root, stem and leaves which can be consumed as fresh root, dried root, ground powder, pickle, ginger oil, ginger candy, ginger water or ginger tea. For thousands of years ginger has been used as a herbal medicine to prevent colds, digestive complaints, nausea and increase circulation in Ayurvedic, Indian and Chinese medicine. In addition to this, ginger is used as a medical plant in Roman, Greek and Ottoman medical history is shown in the records. Nowadays, there are many studies showing that it is important to prevent the nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, postoperative and in pregnancy; to use it in the treatment of colds, joint disease and asthma treatment; to reduce the risk of colorectal and prostate cancer, dysmenorrhea, diabetes and fat metabolism; and body composition in athletes improve exercise performance. When the effective components and chemical structure it contains are examined, two important phytochemicals, such as the volatile and non-volatile fatty acids show these effects of ginger. Although studies show positive effects of ginger on many health problems, more clinical research is needed to prove the most effective dose.
